What Is Claude, Actually?

Claude is an AI model made by Anthropic that you talk to in plain English (or any language) and it writes, reasons, and helps you get things done. Think of it less like a search engine and more like a very well-read colleague who never gets tired of your questions and has read most of the internet.

You can use it to draft an email, debug a spreadsheet formula, summarize a 40-page PDF, plan a trip, or write code you don't know how to write yourself. The interface is a chat window: you type something, Claude replies, you keep going back and forth until you have what you need.

The one thing that trips people up

Claude isn't a database that looks things up. It's a model that generates a response based on patterns it learned during training, plus anything you've given it in the conversation. That means two things worth remembering from day one:

What Claude is actually good at

Writing and rewriting. Explaining things at whatever level you need. Reading and reasoning over long documents. Structuring messy information. Coding. And increasingly, taking actions on your behalf through things like Projects, Artifacts, and connected tools - which later guides in this series cover.

How to get started right now

Go to claude.ai, sign up (free tier is genuinely usable), and open a new chat. Don't overthink your first message. Try something real from your actual day: "Help me write a polite but firm email asking a vendor for a refund" or "Explain what a P&L statement is like I'm new to finance." You'll immediately get a feel for how it responds, and that's worth more than reading ten more explainers.

Try it now: Open Claude and describe one real task from your to-do list today. Not a test question - an actual thing you need done. See what happens.
